Japprends à linstant la mort du cinéaste et romancier sénégalais Sembène Ousmane. Avec émotion, car il fut le premier écrivain africain classique que jai vu en chair et en os, alors que jétais encore au lycée. Je ne sais même plus quelle année sest faite notre rencontre, au lycée de Tokoin. Il était de passage au Togo, sur invitation du centre Culturel Français de Lomé, et je venais de lire sa monumentale saga sur la geste héroïque des syndicats africains, Les bouts de bois de Dieu. Je lisais les grands noms de la littérature africaine dans mon manuel de littérature, dans les années 80, et jimaginais tous ces auteurs décédés. Quel choc ce fut donc de voir lhomme à la pipe dans la salle de permanence du Lytoko. Jen suis encore tout retourné. La vie, plus tard, a fait de moi un écrivain, et je pense à Sembène chaque fois que je rencontre des élèves qui me disent : « on ne savait pas quon pouvait vous rencontrer, M. Alem. » Que la fumée de sa pipe le précède au paradis des croyants !
